Technology.


What is Technology? Technology is the usage and knowledge of tools, techniques, and, or is systems or methods of organization, or is a material product (such as clothing) of these things.Technology has evolved so much and can be found in almost everything. The use of technology has branched and expanded to help people in everyday life. From eating your breakfast in the morning, to brushing your teeth at night, technology helps our everyday routine easier. Technology has contributed to our everyday lives but the most important field that the technology does is medicine. Technology and Medicine have helped aid the sick people, find new cures, and so much more. Technology has also helped us find out about the different systems in our bodies, such as the circulatory, cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, etc. All of this knowledge technology has given us has contributed so much to explore the human body and how it works.

The Endoscope

When surgery is needed your doctor may say that she'll be using an endoscope during your surgery. What is an endoscope? An endoscope is a small surgical video device used during procedures. The endoscope instrument is a lighted flexible instrument in which it contains a camera so a medical professional can use it to inspect interior organs. The first endoscope that was ever created was by Philip Bozzini in 1806 and was first introduced into a human in 1822 by William Beaumont, an army surgeon. It allows the surgeon to work with very small incisions by giving him visual access underneath the skin. During the procedure of using and endoscope, the doctor usually inserts the tube through an opening in the body, such as the mouth or the anus. In different situations the endoscope can also be inserted through a small incision. This endoscope procedure is to see inflammation or bleeding that don`t show up properly on x-rays. The main reasons to perform an endoscopy include symptoms such as bleeding, pain, or any change in bowel (Bowel: the canal between the mouth and anus) habits.

The Stethoscope


What is a stethoscope? It is an instrument for listening inside the body for external and diagnostic purposes. Stethoscopes are also often considered as a symbol of the doctor's profession. Before the Stethoscope was invented the patients were very limited to external observations. It was first invented by Rene Laeneec in France in 1816. Laennac developed a wooden stethoscope. As years pass the American doctor George P. Cammann developed the abinaural stethoscope in 1852 which then became the standard until 1940`s in which Rappaport and Sprague invented a new acoustic stethoscope which was two sided. The two sides were made to listen to the respiratory system or the cardiovascular system, each side only sends out high or low frequencies to the listener`s ears. The Rappaport-Sprague was later produced by Hewlett-Packard. HP's medical products then went to Agilent Technologies, where it became Agilent Healthcare. Agilent Healthcare was purchased by Philips which became Philips Medical Systems. Today here are still cardiologists who consider the original Rappaport-Sprague to be the best acoustic stethoscope. Today Rappaport-Sprague copies are now made in China currently sold for about $20.00US. The Rappaport-Sprague model stethoscope is heavy and short (18–24 in (46–61 cm)).

The Sphygmomanometer


What is a Sphygmomanometer? It is an instrument for measuring blood pressures, particularly in arteries. The Sphygmomanometer was invented by Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch in 1881 and in 1896 Scipione Riva-Rocci invented a more easily used version. Later on, Harvey Cushing discovered this device in 1901 and popularized it. This instrument is consisted of an inflatable cuff, a measuring unit, and inflation bulb and valve. The inflatable cuff is to be put around your upper right arm and the inflation bulb is then to pump the cuff to restrict blood flow around the arm. Slowly, the doctor releases the air in the cuff to let the blood flow properly as he/she reads your blood pressure in the measuring unit. All of these machines have helped us cure millions of people and have been continuing doing so till this very day.

Artificial Selection, YES or NO? @ 7:00 AM

" Artificial selection has resulted in plants that are more disease-resistant, cows that produce more milk, and racehorses that run faster. One must wonder what will come next. In the blog entry answer the following question - under what circumstances should humans be artificially selecting plants, if any? "

What does artificial selection really mean? Artificial selection is only a scientific term used to describe the breeding of plants and animals. These are used to favor different traits of an animal or a plant but are not necessarily for their their own needs to survive better in the wild. Just as they breed cows to produce more milk and more meat selectively through artificial selection. This is also known as selective breeding and unnatural selection. This process called artificial selection began thousands and thousands of years ago, and till today the process of artificial selection is still improving. As years and years go on, the crops and animals we produce now are from evolved plants and animals through artificial selection.

Do we really need this process called artificial selection? In my opinion, we really do need artificial selection now because it is in our today's life cycle and if we do not artificially breed the animal traits that we need and want, I think we would not be able to produce enough meat, milk, crops, and etc. because our generations have evolved to consuming a high amount. The results of artificial selection is very noticeable and almost all the animals that we now artificially select doesn't look anything alike from their ancestors. For example, the Grey Wolf has been artificially selected in order to emphasize the less-aggressive traits of the canines, becoming a bulldog, collie, dachshund and other different types of dogs just as shown in the picture to the right.
Artificially breeding certain animals to attain the desirable traits that people want can be very useful but the use of this process has sometimes gone over the line. People have been breeding closely related animals to have a better chance of getting their desired traits from the animals. This is being done because some animals may acquire traits that most or all animals don't; therefore making the people breed closely related animals. The process of inbreeding are one of the potential dangers of too much artificial selection because this can cause a defect or genetic disorders to the animals. Selectively breeding animals can also essentially reduce the variation of the animal population.

Artificial selection also occurs with plants and has successfully evolved. Plants like the "Brassica oleracea" has been artificially selected successfully. This plant evolved to become six different plants (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, collards and kale) Artificial Selection has it's pros and cons and I believe that this is a positive evolution in our generation. Just as the picture on the left, the corn has evolved from a plant called Teosinte. Artificially selecting plants have helped people evolve plants that are not edible nor desirable. Unlike animals, plants do not get diseases or any sort of disorder, so I highly recommend artificially selecting plants to evolve different plants for our own human needs.

All in all, my opinion of artificially selection is a good way to produce the things we want and need. Artificially selecting plants is a wonderful way of producing healthier, more desirable plants. But artificially selecting animals is a different story, because us humans do not know the limit of selective breeding , we only artificially select animals for our own human liking, which I find a bit disturbing. Lastly I think that artificial selection is a great way for achieving human desires on our plants but not for our animals.

Against or For Designer Babies? @ 9:33 AM

"Designer Babies" is the term Being used by the media to describe the future of modifying or selecting our children's genes for desirable characteristics (medical and cosmetic). Are things getting out of hand with our research into genetic processes?

What are Designer babies? Designer babies were first visioned in 1953 when they discovered the structure of DNA. Designer babies are where the parents and doctors are able to genetically screen embryos for any genetic disorders. Being able to genetically screen embryos, scientists can now perform In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This technique involves the fertilization of the egg by the sperm in test tubes, outside the mother's body. This whole process is called "pre-implantation process" in which they choose an embryo through genetic screening and only the disease free embryos are implanted into the mother's womb. This also has made it possible to eliminate genetic disorders. From genetic screening parents can now pick and change the eye color, skin color, physical attributes and other physical traits such as intelligence, beauty, height, athletic ability, etc. can be also determined.

Are we really going to keep designing babies? Although there are good contributions to designing babies, there also many more downsides to this technology.

There are a few positive contributions to designing babies. In the year of 2000 Adam Nash was the world's first known designer bab
y born by the process of genetic screening and changing the chromosomes. The sister had the rare blood disorder of Fanconi's anaemia, and her brother Adam had a high chance of getting the same blood disorder. Scientists have genetically selected Adam's embryo so that he has the cells to save his dying sister's life. Adam then became a donor to his sister. This case also occured again in the year of 2003. These are just a few positive contributions to designing babies.

Designing babies for those causes may be a good contribution to many lives but there are several cons to designing babies also. Designing babies are well over $18,000. The amount of money used to design a baby will make it unavailable for those who are less fortunate than others. For those who cannot afford genetic engineering will be looked down upon. If genetic engineering is brought upon to the world's socie
ty, it will certainly have a negative impact upon biodiversity and such. People will begin to increase in hate for those who are different, they will be social outcasts if they have genetic defects and the list goes on. Today people with genetic disorders are already starting to become social outcasts now because they have genetic disorders. Families that are rich can enhance their kids attributes and traits, while the less fortunate families cannot afford any of it. The negative contribution that bothers me the most in designing a baby is that some parents that choose their baby's future do not have the ability or freedom to choose what they want to be. All of these can increase the separation of our world's society today.

In conclusion designer babies should not be brought upon this world's society because the negative impacts of it can lead to discrimination across the globe. Although the positive things that a designer baby can save lives, those are only available to rich families because not everyone can afford the special treatment of "pre-implantation process". In my opinion as a religious person designing a baby plays with around with God's creation because God wants to make everyone different and have their own differences and similarities, in which biodiversity can increase. Lastly, I am against designer babies because as Priya Johnson once said
"We as humans did not choose to enter this world! There are myriads of things we do not understand about ourselves as well as the world around us. It is time to realize, that we cannot control everything in this world, although our flesh desires to."

Global warming has taken affect! Have us stewards of the world taken action? @ 7:50 PM


"Many Scientists consider humans as the most invasive species, as humans can greatly change an environment and impact living things that reside there. Are we being stewards of the world? Take a look at an issue in which human intervention has positively or negatively affected the biodiversity of our ecosystems."

DID YOU KNOW? The polar bear, while surviving in drastically reduced numbers, is already effectively extinct in its natural habitat and no amount of change can save it. Scientists estimate that just 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears still survive in the wild.Us humans are failing to become stewards of the world and these occurrences are happening because humans contribute to the worlds unhealthiness.

Do we take action on what is happening to our world and how we affect the biodiversity of our surrounding ecosystems? Are we just lazy to throw garbage in the right place other than the floor? Why don't us humans take initiative and try to prevent anything that will cause global warming? like at least reuse, reduce, recycle or something right? Anyways what does biodiversity really mean? Biodiversity is the different variation of life forms within a given ecosystem. This term is often used as a measure of the health of biological systems. Biodiversity is on a great decline.

Global warming is one of many reasons why our biodiversity is on a great decline and some people only believe that global warming only affects the temperature and ice sheets that are located in Antartica, Greenland and etc. Global warming is an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere that can cause climatic changes. Global warming as we all know it had taken affect on our biodiversity and is not just a story that we used to hear from when we were young. Global warming began to take effect in 2001, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that global warming had begun. The global average surface temperatures are rising faster than at any time in the last 10,000 years.

Over the last 50 years, us humans have taken many actions, especially burning fossil fuels that can release a large amount Carbon dioxide (CO2) and other 'greenhouse’ gases to contribute in our global climate system and warming our planet. We have increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by almost 20% from 1958 to 2004.

Polar bears are the largest carnivores/bear on Earth.These polar bears are completely dependent on sea ice to be able to survive the wild. Polar bears are the arctic's top predator, but they are shockingly facing extinction by the end of this century because the sea ice which they live on are literally melting away caused by global warming. According to many new updated articles, 2/3's of the entire world's polar bear population will all be extinct by the year of 2050(

, from 1979-1991 polar bears were found on sea ice but as the world becomes more and more intoxicated by (CO2) Carbon Dioxide, polar bears in 1992-2004 are now being found in the oceans(MMS (Minerals Management Service) researchers).

In conclusion, there are many ways that we us humans, stewards of the world can do. The best way to prevent the many affects that global warming can do is to stop (CO2) Carbon Dioxide emissions. Anyone can help and do their part of decreasi
ng the amount of (CO2) being produced. Using energy efficient appliances, cutting down terrible wastes, recycling and reusing products are all many different ways. Everyone in the world have a responsibility of doing their part in order to see a change in global warming, because it does not matter how small the changes that every person makes. The Arctic is heating twice as fast as the rest of the world. Conclusion is that the Polar bears could be wipe out by 2100! (Eight-nation report)
